We’ve just had a Frugasm /’fru-g ae-zem/ n., an unrestrained outpouring of excitement and pleasure brought on by the discovery of an impossibly good deal. Look below to see what’s got us hot and bothered right now.

June 6th, 2010

The turn on: In the world of luxury brands, Rock and Republic shines bright where jeans are concerned. Fashion conscious celebrities wear them, and work with the company  too—think Victoria Beckam’s “VB Rocks” range, which was designed in 2004 and is now a collector’s item. R&R’s distinctive and highly recognizable logo looks like it belongs to royalty, which is a good thing because these blue jeans command royal prices: Aritzia sells R&R jeans from $190 to 350, Holt Renfrew has them from $250 to $300.

What’s the deal: Various Lower Mainland Costco locations are selling women’s Rock and Republic jeans in Kasandra, Brewster, Stella and Berlin styles for $98.99. They have men’s Floyd’s for $ 97.99.

Why we’re excited: There’s buzz on the Internet about these jeans at Costco, and speculation about their authenticity. Our style spy was in Costco the other day looking at them when the woman standing next to her made a quick call on her cell then turned to our spy and said, “These are the real deal, you know. I work at Holts and I just called a colleague of mine who is working right now and read her the code inside the pants and it’s the same as the ones we sell.” She said needed to confirm their authenticity before she bought them because there are so many R&R knockoffs out there.

How long will the pleasure last: Right now Costco has lots of pairs in stock in a variety of sizes, but who knows how long supplies will last.

Where’s the F Spot: All Costco locations in the Lower Mainland.

THE TURN ON: Campagnolo, a hip restaurant on Main Street, just took home the Gold for Best New Restaurant of 2010 from Vancouver Magazine’s annual restaurant awards. The atmosphere is warm and casual—blue jeans, suit jackets, whatever. The food is unpretentious but obviously considered—superbly robust cuisine from central Italy.

WHAT’S THE DEAL: Any of their five exquisite homemade rustic pizzas and a pint of R&B Larger or Cream Ale is just $12.50 after 9:30 p.m. every night of the week.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED: The price is awesome. Before 9:30, this same pizza and beer could cost as much as $21.50 (the average price for a main course is $20). If you haven’t tried Campagnolo, this is a good reason to go; if you have, it’s a good reason to go back.

HOW LONG WILL THE PLEASURE LAST: There is no end in sight, according to the management.

WHERE’S THE F SPOT: Campagnolo Restaurant,1020 Main St. Vancouver B.C. (604) 848-6018

The turn on: We get a kick (literally) out of drinking Emergen-C’s energy boosting powder-blend packets of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that are made to be stirred into common tap water. More convenient than popping vitamin pills, this fizzy drink product is a great way to ward off a cold. It is also the perfect pick-me-up water-bottle drink for during or after a workout. Once drunk, twice addicted is all we can say.

What’s the deal: $7.99 for a box of a 30 packets.

Why we’re excited: More like stunned, really. But hey, ours is not to question why this product costs $20.99 (this is the sale price; it is regularly $22.99) at Whole Foods in Vancouver and only $7.99 at Trader Joes in Bellingham; ours is but to buy in bulk on our next trip south.

How long will the pleasure last: Always. This is the regular price a Trader Joes.

Where’s The F Spot: In Bellingham, take exit 255 to Trader Joes, 2410 James Street, (360) 734-5166; open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The turn on: Get your garden started with stock from the two best back-to-back fundraisers in Vancouver: The VanDusen Botanical Garden Plant Sale, and the Spring Festival and Plant Sale at UBC Botanical Garden.

What’s the deal: Fair prices for top-quality plants, with monies going to worthwhile causes.

Why we’re excited: With 40,000 plants at VanDusen and another seven to eight thousand at UBC, you’re going to find something interesting to plant. This year we’re loving all things edible: fruit trees and juicy tomatoes at VanDusen, berries galore at UBC.

How long will the pleasure last: VanDusen sale is tomorrow, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; The UBC sale is next Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where’s The F Spot: VanDusen Botanical Garden, 5251 Oak Street; UBC Botanical Garden, 6804 S.W. Marine Drive, both in Vancouver, of course.

The turn on: Ladies take a meeting in this one, a perfectly tailored striped power pantsuit from Mexx.
What’s the deal: $99. Way down from $220.
Why we’re excited: Well first there’s the price; then there’s the versatility. Wear the two pieces together; push up the sleeves and wear the jacket with a pair or skinny jeans and a little tee; or wear the pants with a classic, plain blouse or sweater. That’s  three new outfits, minimum.
How long will the pleasure last: Sadly, just today. The pantsuit deal is part of a series of rolling, rouge sales presented throughout April by Mexx.
Where’s The F Spot:
Mexx, all locations. Better hurry, Hillary.

The turn on: For the seriously organized, super cheap cardboard bankers-style storage boxes with lids.
What’s the deal: $1.49 each.
Why we’re excited: Conventional bankers boxes sell at Staples six for $15.60, or $2.60 each. These boxes, which once held the reams of paper the stores sell, are equally sturdy and only $1.49, $1.11 cheaper each.
How long will the pleasure last:
Always; this is the regular price.
Where’s The F Spot:
Staples, all locations. You will need to ask about the boxes if you don’t see them displayed.
